Good afternoon, folks, and welcome to our third annual reader mock draft. I'm joined today by Michael Rand, the Todd McShay to my Mel Kiper, and we'll be your hosts today.
If you didn't participate in our first two reader mock drafts, here's the deal: We'll throw a poll up giving you options for the team that is on the clock. After a couple of minutes, the pick will be in and we'll move on to the next team. We'll go all the way to the Vikings' pick at No. 23 then call it a day. Got it?
So let's start with the Rams, who made a blockbuster deal a couple of weeks ago to acquire the top pick from the Titans. I doubt they did that to select a kicker. Their options are Cal's Jared Goff and NDSU's Carson Wentz, though most reports have them taking Goff. Mike, what do you think of these two guys?
Matt's hair is way better than Kiper's
I think it's a classic case of a guy who is more ready now (Goff) against a guy who possibly has more upside down the road (Wentz). If you're picking No. 1, you can't afford to miss. That makes Goff the logical and probably correct choice for the Rams
Also, folks, we will be doing a standard Vikings and NFL draft chat tomorrow, so save your Vikings questions for then. Today's chat is all about this mock draft.
Quarterbacks are funny, though. A lot of times we'll look back on a draft with multiple QBs taken near or at the top of the draft, and there's a massive disparity between them. Peyton Manning vs. Ryan Leaf in 1998 is perhaps the most stunning example, but there are others. So the Rams really put the pressure on themselves by moving into the top spot
This year was interesting for sure, Mike. None of these QB prospects were considered can't miss and we've had two teams trade into the top two to take them.
OK, the pick is in. The Rams select QB Jared Goff. The Eagles are on the clock.
As a native North Dakotan myself, Carson Wentz is a sentimental pick. The idea that someone who played college football in my home state will be one of the first players chosen in the draft is amazing.
I know much have been made about Philly's approach at QB this offseason, but I don't mind it. They gave a two-year deal to Sam Bradford and gave nice money to backup Chase Daniel. There were no guarantees they could get into the top five for one of these guys. And now they have and don't need Bradford. They'll have to eat some dead money, but maybe they can get a late pick by trading him.
I think they will trade Bradford. They can play Chase Daniel then go to Wentz whenever he is ready.
The pick is in. The Eagles select Carson Wentz. The Chargers are on the clock.
The Eagles are throwing a lot at the wall to see what sticks. Not sure that's the best approach in the NFL, but we will see.
Here's where things can get interesting because there isn't a ton of sure-fire consensus in a lot of these next picks
Look at all these glorious options!
The Chargers are in a great spot now that these two teams have traded ahead of them to take quarterbacks, something they don't need. They now get their choice of the best non-quarterback in the draft, and there are good options at need positions for them. They could also trade back a few spots and still get a good player, which I think they will do. No trades in this mock, though.
Chargers have to be a little bummed both teams ahead of them are going to take QBs. Probably could use a QB of the future to replace Rivers.
Oh, Rand. Rivers just signed a contract extension. He's not going anywhere anytime soon.
The pick is in. The Chargers select Laremy Tunsil. The Cowboys are on the clock.
His cap hit is ridiculous. Chargers might as well just play for 2020 because they aren't going anywhere
Jerry Jones just selected Johnny Manziel. Let's move on
Big question here, as always, is whether Jerry Jones can contain himself and make a good football move instead of a splash. I think Ramsey would be the best fit here, but Elliott or even Lynch could be tempting
If I'm the Cowboys, I take Ramsey here and figure out where to play him later. He's an excellent prospect and they need help at both corner and safety.
Seems like you guys have faith in Jerry based on the poll. I'm impressed
They've done a good job of keeping Jerry under wraps, like when they passed on Manziel and wound up with an all-pro guard.
Jury's still out on Manziel, though
You need a sarcasm font, Mike.
Send us your number and I'll call you when every pick is in and sing Toxic by Britney Spears
The pick is in. The Cowboys select DE Joey Bosa. The Jags are on the clock, and they're probably pretty pumped that the local kid, Ramsey, is still there.
Apparently I need a sarcasm tone of voice, too
Yeah, have to figure this is Ramsey here to Jacksonville at 5
Physical, versatile, local. What's not to like?
Jacksonville can use all the help it can get.
