After many days of heavy rain in all parts of Minnesota and in anticipation of more yet to come, Gov. Mark Dayton declared a state of emergency in 35 counties affected by flooding that has swamped farm fields, urban highways and small-town streets from one end of the state to another.
Also Thursday, Dayton directed the Minnesota National Guard to send 100 soldiers to Koochiching County to aid the flood response in International Falls and other communities near the Rainy River and Rainy Lake. Dayton visited that area just south of Canada on Tuesday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said more than 6 inches of rain has fallen in some parts of the Twin Cities area Thursday, swelling streams and sending water gushing onto roads, highways and other nontraditional locales. In other parts of the state, mudslides have closed highways.
Flash flood warnings are in place until 6:30 p.m. Thursday for all of Hennepin, Dakota and Ramsey counties, and portions of Anoka, Washington, Carver, Goodhue and Rice counties.
